The atmosphere was cool and crisp as the first rays of sunlight dawned over the horizon to greet the first day of the 202nd decade, which had, as its predecessor, begun with a blast and then some. Hundreds and thousands gathered in the streets at the toll of midnight to test their tolerance of the negative degrees of the centigrade scale and to say farewell to yesteryear and prepare to exchange their calendars for ones that had not yet been unfolded. Some drunk, others about to be, all jovial and even more partial to blowing their November salaries sky high in all the colors that burning chemicals can produce with ear-wrecking bangs and crackling to boot.
So it began, January 1st, the first of a handful of binary dates akin to any other year. Nothing extraordinary, a day like any other, only a mere excuse for man to celebrate the planet’s completion of another elliptical cycle around the yellow dwarf that is our Sun. Just another chapter filled with endless promises to not only be broken, but bashed to smithereens. Promises to study more for upcoming exams only to fail and repeat the class a year later; to start your healthy and nutritious diet… right after finishing off the chocolate that Santa brought and all of the other sweets you end up purchasing after stepping on board the Sugar Rush Train to Candyland; to show more love and caring toward family and friends who seem more important than ever, but come Valentine’s Day and all’s forgotten; to give up your habitual smoking and drinking until your biological cuckoo clock calls it beer o’clock and you discover yourself trapped an uncontrollable urge to rid your system of an acute nicotine deficiency.
My heartfelt condolences go out to all the shortsighted albeit optimistic hopes for the betterment of ourselves. I’d suggest to rather set your goals lower and aim that much higher, so as to avoid disappointment and achieve more than you originally set out to accomplish. Then again nobody has the authority to say what’d be the best approach to solving the matter as each is an individual and should treat themselves accordingly.
And yet again I find myself thinking what would Brian Boitano do?
